Tobacco is the third most common cause of migraine headache among people aged over 60 in England, according to NHS figures, with an estimated 1.8 million people in the first stage of the migraine cycle taking the drug for pain.
It’s thought that the drug’s analgesic properties help to reduce the severity of migraine headaches and other common migraine-related symptoms, which in turn can lead to less frequent headaches and less anxiety.
The NHS says that up to 25 per cent of people with migrainous headaches will eventually go on to have an episode, and around 5 per cent will develop the condition again after their first migraine attack.
